Described by composers Drew Krause and Libby Larsen as "Awesome!" and "Thrilling"; Kim Reece (b. 1983) is an emerging saxophonist who has been active as a performer throughout North America as a soloist and chamber musician. An avid performer of new works, Reece recently premiered Alborado for soprano saxophone and electronics by Bei Zhang, which won the second prize at the Prix d'Ete at the Peabody Institute. She will also perform the piece at the Electronic Music Midwest conference in October, 2010.
Reece holds degrees from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, the University of Arizona (UA) and Lawrence University, Conservatory of Music (LU). Primary teachers include, Steven Jordheim, Gary Louie, Timothy McAllister and Joe Wimmer.
At Peabody, Reece was selected to perform Libby Larsen's Holy Roller at the commencement ceremony. She also performed with numerous chamber music ensembles including the Black Box Quartet, mixed chamber ensembles and recently performed Louis Andriessen's Hout for tenor saxophone, electric guitar, marimba and piano.
Reece was the soprano chair of the Catalina Saxophone Quartet while at the UA. The group had an extensive performance schedule throughout the United States, Mexico and Canada, performing at numerous festivals, competitions and outreach programs. Concluding their tenure together, they released their recording of Gavin Bryars’ Alaric I or II on Arizona University Recordings’ CD release, America’s Millennium Tribute to Adolphe Sax: Volume XIV.
Reece currently lives in Portland, OR where she serves on the faculty at Portland State University and Reed College. When not practicing or teaching, she enjoys snowboarding, playing with her cat Frisbee, driving her MINI Cooper and spending time with friends and family.
